What is the Common App?

The  Common App is an online college application platform that allows you to apply to multiple colleges and universities in one place. Instead of completing separate applications from the beginning for every school, you can enter much of your information in one place and submit applications to participating colleges.

The Basics

1. Create an Account

Start by creating your Common App account. You can then begin completing your student profile and application information.

2. Explore Colleges

Use Common App to explore participating colleges and universities and find schools that match your interests and goals.

3. Add Colleges to Your List

Once you find colleges you are interested in, add them to your My Colleges list. This will help you keep track of each school’s requirements and application deadlines.

4. Complete Your Application

You may be asked to provide information about:

  • Your personal and family background
  • Your high school and academic history
  • Your activities and experiences
  • Your honors and achievements
  • Your future plans

Some colleges may also require additional questions or materials.

5. Write Your Essay

You may need to complete the Common App personal essay as part of your application. Some colleges may also require additional essays or supplemental questions.

6. Request Recommendations and Documents

Depending on the colleges you apply to, you may need:

  • Teacher recommendations
  • Counselor recommendations
  • Transcripts
  • School reports

Make sure to request these materials early so they can be submitted before your deadlines.

7. Check Each College’s Requirements

Every college may have different application requirements, deadlines, and fees. Make sure you carefully review the requirements for every school on your list.

8. Review and Submit

Before submitting your application, review all of your information carefully. Make sure every required section is complete and all necessary documents have been submitted.

Helpful Reminder

Start your application early and keep track of each college’s individual requirements and deadlines. Common App provides resources for planning your college path, exploring financial aid and scholarships, and completing your application.
