Students get firsthand knowledge for first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and they learn to bandage patients, take blood pressure, and check airwave, breathing, and circulation (ABCs) in the event of a patient injury.

9th and 10th graders are introduced to the program and if they are inclined to pursue a career in the fire department they would move to the fire rescues academy.

Health and science classes 1 and 2 offer classes with medical aspects, including knowledge about cardiac, kidney and heart failure. Those interested in the medical field will learn about the body i.e. spine knowledge and detecting patients with diabetes. Review real life scenarios include the ride along with the paramedics to have first-hand knowledge of how to take care of patients. Another aspect of the lessons consist of how to ask patients assessment skills to diagnose symptoms with initial steps, how to protect themselves from the patient, safety, and body substance isolation (BSI).

Other important lessons include search and rescue, hoisting of tools, introduction to ladders how to maneuver, usage of gear, to name a few. EMT and then paramedic is the career path…this academy will prepare the students to have basic understanding of all patient care.

Emphasis is placed on communication and interpersonal skills, use of technology, ethics and the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students will also learn first aid skills and demonstrate the measurement of vital signs. Students may shadow professionals throughout the course.

This course prepares students to be employed as Emergency Medical Responders. Content includes, but not limited to, identifying and practicing within the appropriate scope of practice for an Emergency Medical Responder, demonstrating correct medical procedures for various emergency situations, proficiency in the appropriate instruments used, as well as a foundation in the musculoskeletal system of the body.

Provides immediate lifesaving care to critical patients who access the emergency medical services system. EMRs have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide immediate lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS resources to arrive. EMRs also provide assistance to higher-level personnel at the scene of emergencies and during transport. Emergency Medical Responders are a vital part of the comprehensive EMS response. Under medical oversight, Emergency Medical Responders perform basic interventions with minimal equipment.

This course prepare students to be employed as Home Health Aides, Content includes but is not limited to patient care and safety, geriatric patient care, nutrition principles, rehabilitation services as well as supervised management functions.

This course prepares students to be employed as Electrocardiograph aides. Content includes, but is not limited to, a foundation in the cardiovascular system, safety measures for the individual, co-workers and patients as well as training in the appropriate theories and instruments used by an Electrocardiograph Aide.

Provides review of the anatomy and physiology of the heart, focusing on the circulatory system and the electrical activity of the heart. Topics: how to transport and prepare a patient for electrocardiogram; EKG paper and measures; cardiac rate determination; cardiac cycle; EKG waves and intervals; interpretation of waves and problems which may occur while taking an EKG; special recording of EKG; the EKG and the most common cardiac arrhythmias: the EKG in the myocardial infarction.
