The Mass Communications Academy at the City of Hialeah Educational Academy is a unique and exciting program that educates students on the complex and evolving world of journalism and digital media.
The academy provides students with a hands-on, team building approach that incorporates the following forms of communication: photography, cinematography, newsletter creation, social media, public relations, video editing, film production, script writing, advertising, marketing and public speaking. Students in this program will gain experience using professional equipment, collaborate with peers in a robust student newsroom and work in a brand new studio.
As part of the academy, students will contribute to the morning and afternoon school announcements, The Paw Print newsletter, and The Bulldog Network, the school’s YouTube channel.
Exploring Technology 7th / 8th grade
This course is designed to prepare students to explore careers in the field of television. Students will learn the history of Broadcast Journalism and will gain the essential skills to write for broadcast news. Students will also learn the technical aspects of the Broadcasting industry
Journalism I 9th grade
This course focuses on Associated Press Writing Style, and the basics of yearbook/newspaper/TV production. This course is designed to develop basic entry-level skills required for careers in the writing and editing industry required for students to progress to television production in subsequent years.
Digital Media Foundations 2 10th grade
This course covers competencies in safety, lighting, basic television production equipment, broadcast script interpretation, teamwork, research and audio and video editing.
Digital Media Productions 3 11th grade
This course covers competencies in special effects lighting, use of equipment, digital audio and video recording and editing operations, television production and programming, and online research.
Digital Video Technologies 4 12th grade
This course is designed so high school students can use what they have learned in prior courses and apply it to the daily EA TV newscast. It includes developing the technical and content aspects of a newscast, getting a rundown completed, getting scripts approved, a competent technical staff in place and a daily show respecting and honoring the Student Television Network’s code of ethics. This course covers competencies in special effects lighting, use of equipment, digital audio and video recording and editing operations, television production and programming, and online research.
Adobe Illustrator Certification & Adobe Premier Pro Certification
The Adobe Certified Associate exams provide the education and certification students need to succeed. For those pursuing higher education in the digital media field, this certification provides prerequisite knowledge and skills. For those certified students seeking immediate employment in high demand areas of digital communication, these certifications provide a valuable competitive edge.
